The recent drop in fuel prices has brought petrol and diesel costs down to levels rarely seen in Luxembourg in recent months.
It’s a welcome development for motorists, who have been grappling with soaring prices since the coronavirus crisis. In recent weeks, however, they have seen prices falling once again.
Diesel, now priced at €1.367 per litre, has once again become the cheapest fuel in Luxembourg, after having been more expensive than petrol for nearly one of the past three years.
Simply put, diesel prices have hardly been this low since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. There were only a few brief periods – in May 2023 (€1.376) and September 2024 (€1.368) – when prices were slightly lower. Otherwise, diesel had peaked at around €2 (in June and October 2022) and was still selling for over €1.50 at the start of 2025. Of course, the days of the Covid pandemic, when prices dropped below €1, are now a distant memory.
The same trend can be seen with petrol. 95-octane petrol is now selling at €1.45 per litre, compared to €1.674 a year ago and €1.55 at the start of this year.
Oil prices fell to their lowest level in four years, partly due to concerns about the escalating trade war between the US and other countries.
