Agriculture being ignored says Senator Israel Bruce

Opposition Senator, Israel Bruce, is questioning why the government has not built an abattoir in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), and is instead exporting the country’s meat-producing animals to Grenada.

Bruce is also questioning the lack of international markets for local agricultural produce and thinks that the agricultural sector in SVG is going nowhere fast, and the current administration has not shown farmers anything practical and realistic.

The opposition politician said on radio earlier this month that the area of meat production also has to be looked at in order to bring prosperity to farmers.

“If we do have an abattoir, we’ll be able to assist the meat producing farmers to cut their meats to international standards, and allow the meat from our farmers to enter the eastern seaboard of America and fetch the best set of prices selling it as free range meat, which Grenada is doing,” Bruce said.

He pointed out that Grenada is buying cattle, goats, and sheep from SVG, taking the animals to their abattoir, cutting the meats to international standard and sending the cuts to the eastern seaboard of the USA and making huge profits.
