Friends for Conservation and Development engages students as part of Belize River Community Outreach

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On April 18, 2024, Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) participated in the launch of the Belize River Community Outreach component for the project “Integrated management of production landscape to deliver multiple global environmental benefits”.

“The Belize River plays a critical role in water security and provides numerous ecosystem servicesto communities downstream its banks. However, it faces 3 major threats: pollution from solid waste, grey water discharge, and deforestation,” FCD noted.

Recently, FCD and partners interacted with 64 students and 4 teachers from St. Francis Xavier R.C School Cayo in Esperanza, in a learning session on the importance of the Belize River, as well as actions they can undertake to address the threats it faces.

The outreach was made possible through the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Climate Change, with financial support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

FCD also extended gratitude to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology for their invaluable support in making this initiative a reality.
